What Are Dental Implants?

We created dental implants in dentistry to put permanent teeth in your mouth instead of dentures or dental bridges. Dentures are an excellent substitute for your natural teeth, but because they sit on top of your gums, they may not be the best solution for you. Dentures do not save your jawbone, which is why you may want to consider implants. That’s because implants screw into your jaw, and anchors the prosthetic tooth to your jawbone. The screw acts like the root of your tooth, and because your jaw thinks your tooth is intact, the jaw doesn’t begin to deteriorate. You can restore the teeth you lost and save your jaw as well. You can have a single tooth implanted or several.

We can put in an entire set of teeth as implants, but we can also do a single tooth implant, or we can do a multiple tooth implant. Implants are a fantastic way to get back the teeth you lost.

How Does the Dental Implant Procedure Work?

There are several steps in the process of getting your teeth restored through implants. First, we need to have a look at your teeth and gums to make sure your oral health is ok. If you have gum disease, we will need to treat it first, because if you have gum disease, you can’t support an implant.

After we check and make sure that your gums are healthy, we then need to check your implant site. If you need to have a single tooth implant, the implant placement procedure is simple. We make an incision in the gumline, and we screw the screw into your jawbone to anchor your tooth. After we screw the implant screw into your jawbone, we can then place a prosthetic tooth on top.

If you have to do a multiple tooth implant, we need to place your implants a little differently. Just as with a single tooth implant, we check your gums first. We need to make sure you don’t have active gum disease. If you have gum disease, we need to treat it first. We will make multiple incisions along your gumline to place the screws into your jaw. Typically, we set one screw for each tooth we’re implanting, but we can do implants with fewer screws. Multiple tooth implants may consist of a bridge, or an entire jaw full of teeth, using an All-on-4/all-on-6 Treatment Concept procedure, which uses four to six screws.
